Getting corrected without losing your flow
Harsh correction kills confidence; no correction stalls progress. The sweet spot is gentle, in-the-moment fixes that keep you talking. Here's what that looks like.
There are two ways to ruin correction. Over-correct, and the learner clams up, afraid to open their mouth. Under-correct, and mistakes fossilize — repeated until they feel right and become permanent. Good correction lives between those, and it has a recognizable shape.
What good correction feels like
- It's immediate but light — the phrase is repeated back correctly, in passing, without a lecture.
- It keeps the conversation moving. You hear the fix, echo it once, and carry on.
- It targets the mistake that's getting in the way, not every tiny slip. Communication first, polish second.
- It praises what worked, so you know which risks to keep taking.
This is roughly how a good human tutor operates: they don't stop you mid-sentence to diagram your error, they recast what you said in the correct form and let you absorb it. You pick it up because it arrived exactly when the meaning was live in your head.
Echo the fix once
One small habit doubles the value of any correction: when you're corrected, say the corrected version out loud once before moving on. That single repetition turns a fix you heard into a fix you produced — and producing it is what makes it stick.
Vaexi avatars correct exactly this way — gently, in the moment, with a word of encouragement — and you can interrupt them any time, just like a real call.
